Knitting Help With Styles And Methods

Knitting Help With Styles And Methods

There are many styles and methods of knitting. Continental knitting and English or American knitting are both styles. The continental style is knitting with needles but using more of your fingers to throw the yarn as the English style is more where you use your hands and throw the yarn around the needle.

Methods of knitting would be hand knitting, machine knitting and loom knitting. All produce the same woven product but the manner of creating this article is different.

Knitting by hand is a created by using two needles and usually one strand of yarn. The needle size will determine the size of the stitches. This is the most easily portable of all the knitting as you only have to carry the needles and yarn.

One needle will hold the stitches and as you knit you will pass the newly created stitches to the other needle. You can make anything from tiny baby booties to huge bulky afghans with the knitting needles.

Not only will the size of the needles determine the finished size of the product but also the yarn. You can buy yarn as thin as thread or as bulky as rope. Naturally the larger the yarn the bigger the end product and the fewer stitches you will need.

Needles are made form different products also. Many people prefer bone to wood needles and then there is also the standard metal needle and plastic. As you learn to knit you will find the size and type of needle that you prefer.

Machine knitting is done on a machine running a carriage back and forth on the machine to produce the article. There are different makes, models and sizes of knitting machines. You can find them for children on up to the computerized commercial types. Rather than work each stitch you work in rows and them machine does the stitches in one movement for you.

Knitting machine patterns

A knitting machine can create patterns and designs by computer, punch card or manual manipulation of the needles. The machines come in standard gauge to the bulky, you can work with one bed or have two bed with the second one being a ribber. Many stitches can be created on the machine and today's machines usually have them built-in.

The tension on the machine will determine stitch size and well as the yarn used. You can not use bulky yarn on a standard machine but you can use multiple strands of thin yarn on a bulky machine.

A hat than can take days to hand knit and be created on a machine in a matter of minutes. This is a great time saver and you can produce production line style if you desire. This is great especially if you get easily bored with manipulating each individual stitch as needed in hand knitting.

Loom knitting has been around for centuries. It seems to have been forgotten in the last century but is now seeing a comeback. Looms all use to be huge pieces of equipment, but today you can get small hand-held looms to make tiny items like booties.

Knitting looms patterns

Most looms come with pegs to which you wrap your yarn around and then slip the prior stitch over. This will create the knit stitch. When looming you generally use two strands of yarn not just one. The looms can be round or straight. The size of the item you wish to knit will determine the size of the loom you use. Also the distance between pegs is a factor in article size.

The large looms that are round can make adult hats and you would need a smaller loom with closer pegs to do baby booties. As with needles you will need more than one size to create different items. The rake or board looms are great for scarves and sweaters. While the round ones are good for hats, mittens and slippers. Like any other knitting you can create different stitches and designs with loom knitting.

You can choose any one of these methods of knitting and have a great deal of fun. Personally I suggest you try them all. I find each one has a place in my life and I enjoy each and every one.
